Since Roe was overturned, thousands of people in red states have found a way to get an abortion—often thanks to providers operating at the edge of the law.

A federal law requires hospitals to provide abortions when necessary to prevent serious health consequences. The justices could neutralize that law.

“We turned in 232,000 signatures,” said Karen Middleton, the President of the abortion access nonprofit, Cobalt, one of the groups spearheading the effort.

The measure says that the government “shall not deny, impede, or discriminate against the exercise of the right to abortion, including prohibiting health insurance coverage for abortion.
