Cobalt Calls on Colorados Federal Delegation to Speak Up for Adriana Smith, Back Reproductive Freedom Caucus Statement

Denver – Cobalt is calling on Colorado’s federal delegation to speak up for Adriana Smith, a brain dead woman in Georgia who’s being kept on life support due to the state’s six week abortion ban. Smith was nine weeks pregnant in February when she suffered a fatal stroke. She is now being kept on life support by the hospital, against her family’s wishes, until the fetus reaches viability in August.

“This horrifying situation happened because Trump’s Supreme Court overturned Roe, allowing Georgia’s 2019 six week abortion ban to take effect in 2022,” said Cobalt President Karen Middleton. “This is what happens when politicians give the state the power to make decisions about what someone can do with their body, rather than individuals and medical professionals. Abortion bans are about power. And in this case, it has taken power away from Adriana Smith and her family to decide what is best and least traumatizing for them.”

“We are calling on Colorado’s federal delegation, all our Senators and Representatives, to make statements in support of Adriana Smith, just as Rep. DeGette and the Reproductive Freedom Caucus already have. And we are calling on them to oppose ANY federal legislation that would limit bodily autonomy and reproductive health care.”

“Adriana Smith does not deserve this. She deserves dignity, peace, and respect. Her family does not deserve this. And no other American should have to endure this kind of cruelty because politicians think they know better than patients and health care providers.”
