STATEMENT ON A FIFTH ATTEMPT AT AN ABORTION BAN FAILING TO MAKE THE COLORADO BALLOT

Denver – Cobalt President Karen Middleton today issued the following statement on reports that the latest attempt at an abortion ban, Initiative #56, will fail to even turn in signatures to make the Colorado ballot. Four such ballot measures have been defeated by landslide margins since 2008. A fifth attempt failed to gather enough signatures in 2012.

“Four times in Colorado, and just last week in neighboring Kansas, voters have made their decision known by overwhelming majorities: they support abortion rights and do not want abortion bans in their state.

This latest failure by Colorado abortion opponents means the message is clear: Enough is enough. Stop with this foolishness.

With Roe overturned and abortion access returned to the states, Colorado must remain a place where pregnant people can access abortion care without shame, stigma, political interference, or cost barriers. We are already increasing the funding, patient support, and overall capacity for the Cobalt Abortion Fund for both in and out of state clients.

And while the Reproductive Health Equity Act is now law, it is not enough. We intend to go to the ballot in 2024 and ask Colorado voters to ensure abortion access is protected in our Constitution as well as in state law.”
